The Ghost Of Expensive Repairs Yet To Come!
AAMCO checked over the transmission in the van today.
Their diagnosis?
The transmission is OK, it's the "instrument panel cluster," or something like that, which is malfunctioning. That the word "cluster" is part of the description is very apt. (Read: Not covered by AAMCO's warranty!)
Their suggestion? Take it to "Bill's Automotive Repair" over on Horseshoe Road and pay them fix it.
That this place is located on "Horseshoe Road" is also very apt. As in, "...and the Horseshoe Road in on!"
(A tip of the hat to NPR's Cartalk!)

I don't think there is much in life more frustrating than having to have your car repaired. I hope all goes well.
man. well at least it ain't the transmission
Is the van performing badly or is it just a warning light of some sort?
allan: The van will not shift out of first gear and random indicators on the dash (including the shift indicator) are randomly lighting or not lighting.
It kinda did this a year ago. Apparently the cluster thingy is forcing the transmission not to shift.
They van is safe & sound at the new repair shop. They'll start looking at it early next week.
Yep. I just got that "economic stimulus check" last week, so like clockwork I'm looking at an auto repair bill! I blame this on Bush, of course...
Ergh. I hope this finally gets sorted out for you.
